Former F1 chief executive to be charged with fraud
LONDON, July 11: Former Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone will be charged with fraud by false representation following a government investigation into his overseas assets, British prosecutors said Monday. Chief Crown Prosecutor Andrew Penhale said after reviewing evidence from the tax office, authorities have charged Ecclestone over his failure to declare overseas assets worth over 400 million pounds. Simon York, of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, said the announcement followed a “complex and worldwide” investigation into the 91-year-old businessman’s finances. The case will be heard at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Aug 22. (AP)
Football referee comes out as gay, hopes to inspire others
SAO PAULO, July 11: A FIFA-ranked referee in Brazil says he hopes his announcement that he is gay will inspire others in football. The 41-year-old Igor Benevenuto is one of the country’s main video assistant referees, and he also takes charge of some matches in Brazil’s top two divisions. Benevenuto said he had used his referee’s job to “hide.” Benevenuto lives in the city of Sete Lagoas in Minas Gerais state. He returned to his work as a nurse at a public hospital in the city when football came to a halt during the COVID-19 pandemic. (AP)
Haaland promises goals after welcome by City fans
MANCHESTER, July 11: Erling Haaland joined in the singing and chanting by Manchester City fans as the new signing was presented outside the stadium of the Premier League champions. The Norway striker completed his move to City from Borussia Dortmund for 60 million euros to return to England, the country of his birth. Asked what he would bring to the Premier League, the 21-year-old Haaland said: “Hopefully some more quality with me as a striker. I want to have fun. When I have fun I score goals, I smile, I enjoy playing football, I smile a lot.” Haaland has scored 20 goals in 21 appearances for Norway and netted 86 goals in 89 games in 2 1/2 seasons with Dortmund. Atwal finishes T-63, Mullinax wins Barbasol Championship
NICHOLASVILLE (US), July 11: India’s Arjun Atwal had a birdie and a bogey on either side of the Keene Trace Golf Club course on a final day when he played 29 holes, 11 of them from the previous round, to finish T-63 at the Barbasol Championship. Atwal shot 73-70 in the final two rounds for a total of 7-under 281. He closed his final round on Par-3 ninth with a chip-in for the second time in the week. He is also in the field for the Barracuda Championship next week. Meanwhile, Trey Mullinax birdied the 72nd hole to win the title by a single stroke. (PTI)
Netherlands’ women captain Van Veenendaal out of Euros
THE HAGUE (Netherlands), July 11: Sari van Veenendaal, goalkeeper and captain of the defending champion Netherlands, has been ruled out for the remainder of the Women’s European Championship after injuring her shoulder in her team’s 1-1 draw with Sweden in their Group C opener. Van Veenendaal will return to the Netherlands on Monday and be replaced by Feyenoord goalkeeper Jacintha Weimar. (AP)
