SHILLONG, July 13: In the past two weeks, residents of Thangsning and Jongksha areas in East Khasi Hills district have been subjected to several hardships due to frequent power failures.
Two weeks ago, the whole area was reportedly covered with darkness for almost three days as there was no electricity for 53 hours straight. When contacted, some of the residents of the area said the villagers had a horrifying experience since they had no information as to why there was no electricity for almost three days.
According to them, there was no notice from the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) that load-shedding will be effected due to the maintenance work.
The residents feel that it is the responsibility of the MeECL to inform the people as to why there was no electricity and the reason behind the out-of-the-blue shutdown.
Nonetheless, the villagers made peace with the fact that this is a common phenomenon in the area.
Moreover, it is reported that many of the villages in the area including Thangsning remained without power supply from 4.30 pm on Tuesday. Electricity was restored after more than 20 hours on Wednesday at around 2 pm. The locals have urged the MeECL to ensure that the problem of frequent power outage in these areas is resolved.
When contacted, Mawkynrew MLA and cabinet minister Banteidor Lyngdoh said that he was aware about the scenario in Thangsning and Jongksha areas. He revealed that the MeECL is still implementing load-shedding in the area, which is unacceptable.
Stating that he has taken up the issue with the Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of MeECL, DP Wahlang, the Mawkynrew MLA said the CMD has assured to direct officials of MeECL to address the problem of frequent power failure in the two areas.
Meanwhile, residents of other areas such as Upper Shillong and Umiam Khwan where the Union Christian College is located, have also complained about frequent power cuts despite the chief minister’s announcement that there will be no load-shedding.
