SHILLONG, July 15: Nongkrem MLA Lambor Malngiang has alleged that attempts were made to disturb reach of central services among people over “petty politics” in Madanrting, which on Friday became the first census town in Meghalaya to receive the benefits of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
The foundation stone-laying ceremony was organised to commemorate the occasion and was attended by Malngiang as the chief guest, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo, executive members of the Dorbar Shnong Madanrting, et al.
Addressing the gathering after laying the foundation stone, Malngiang said, “I was really disappointed to learn someone is playing petty politics to prevent the people from getting benefits from the government scheme.”
Expressing happiness that attempts to mar the occasion did not materialise, he said, “As an MLA, I am just happy I have been able to perform my duties as an elected representative of the constituency.”
Informing the gathering about MGNREGS, Malngiang said the scheme aims to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year, which will go a long way in securing the future of the locals.
“Besides providing economic security and creating rural assets, the scheme will enable families to save money as they will be able to work closer to their homes,” he said.
Stressing on the support provided under MGNREGS for women and also for the creation of self-help groups, Malngiang urged the locals to come forward and avail the benefits of the scheme.
Meanwhile, the DC, in her address, informed that 29 census towns in the East Khasi Hills will be included under the MNREGA.
Terming the occasion as a landmark achievement, she stressed on the importance of people making use of the scheme to find solutions to various problems.
Laloo also expressed hope that MNREGA will go a long way in economically empowering women.
