GSI holds spate of events in Shillong

SHILLONG, July 16: A plethora of events was organised recently in Shillong by the Geological Survey of India, North Eastern Region, as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.
According to a statement, blood donations camps, plantation programmes, academia-GSI interactions, quiz competitions, field training, webinars, etc., were some of the events take were conducted in a spate by the GSI here.
As a part of the celebrations, GSI office in Shillong organised blood donation camps and plantation drives, which were participated by officials and employees.
“Three webinars on Geology of Himalaya, Seismic Micro/Macro Zonation, and Engineering Geology and its application in infrastructure development of the nation were organised by the Regional Headquarters, Shillong, whereas two other webinars on landslide causes and its mitigation measures were organised by State Unit Assam and Sikkim to create awareness among the general public and students on public good geosciences,” the statement said.
On Friday, the GSI also conducted various events for school and college students of Shillong.
“Seventy-five balloons carrying the message of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav were released at the outset which was followed by field training for students of St. Anthony’s college, Shillong, at Umium Hydro Electric Project,” the statement informed.
A museum and laboratory visit was also organised for schoolchildren, which was then followed by a quiz competition.
A coffee table book on geo-tourism hotspots of Northeast was also released as part of the celebrations.
It is pertinent to note that similar programmes were organised by the GSI in other Northeastern states, involving the student and teaching fraternities.
