SHILLONG, Aug 4: Meghalaya government will examine the demand for a resolution in the Assembly to urge the central government to do away with any plan to take up uranium mining in the state, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Thursday.
“We will examine it and take necessary steps,” said the CM while reacting to the demand.
The HYC had asked the state government to pass a resolution in the Assembly.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin said the Government of India is still contemplating on establishing mining centre and exploratory mining of uranium in the state as reflected in Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh’s reply in the Lok Sabha recently.
Meanwhile, on the issue of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the eighth schedule of the Constitution, the CM said, “It is a process and we have done the step that a government should do, which is to pass a resolution in the House.”
Now the ball is in Centre’s court, Conrad said.
“We are pursuing (the issue) with them. We need to continue lobbying and working with the Centre on both the matters,” he added.
