SHILLONG, Aug 16: The whistling village of India Kongthong celebrated Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav with Rajya Sabha member Rakesh Sinha, who adopted the village and is constantly working for its development especially in terms of tourism.
Speaking during the celebrations, Sinha said the pace of development of Kongthong is slow.
“The state should understand (village’s) worth for the global attraction due to its special whistling characteristic. It is now a global village. The state should form a committee to monitor its infrastructure development,” he said.
Sinha pointed out that the people of Kongthong fail to get what they deserve due to the presence of middlemen. He stressed that there is a need to form a cooperative society so that farmers of Kongthong and surrounding 12 villages can sell their products such as brooms, honey, flowers, etc., directly to the consumers.
He has maintained that there is a need to complete the road from Kongthong to Sader, adding that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has already promised that the said road will be completed.
Talking about the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, Sinha said the people of Meghalaya have shown tremendous enthusiasm for the Tricolour this year.
Padm Shri Trinity Saioo accompanied Sinha to Swer, where the two of them along with State BJP president Ernest Mawrie participated in the celebration attended by students and locals.
After receiving a warm welcome, Sinha promised that he would convince the government to complete the road between Ramakrishna Mission School and the sacred forest.
On the day, Sinha also said that the gate which was constructed in Kongthong with people’s donation would be dedicated to great freedom fighter U Tirot Sing.
Earlier, the Rajya Sabha member hoisted the national flag in Sohra Academy Senior Secondary School and joined the students and teachers for a cultural programme.
In her address, Trinity heaped praise on Sinha for creating consciousness among people for their rights.
She also said that she had never seen such enthusiasm in the people for Tricolour as in 2022.
