JOWAI, Aug 26: Making a final attempt to make the government hear their pleas, the All Jaintia Mid Day Meal Workers’ Union on Friday threatened to hit the streets from Monday if their salary was not enhanced by Sunday.
Their demands include enhancement of their monthly salary, pay for 12 months and provision for water and cooking gas in the school kitchens.
President of the union Jerry A Suting mentioned that all mid-day meal cooks in Jaintia Hills were being paid Rs 100 per month as honorarium since 2002 as the state share.
He recalled that they had written to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma six times demanding that their salaries should be hiked to Rs 1000 from the state’s share.
They also demanded that they should be paid salaries for 12 months and not 10 months as was the norm.
