SHILLONG, Sep 14: Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday informed the Assembly that since the injunction of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in April 2014, a total number of 1851 cases of illegal extraction and transportation of coal have been registered with 495 persons convicted so far. The total includes 199 cases of illegal extraction of coal and 1652 cases of illegal transportation.
Rymbui said 1462 cases have been charge sheeted, 242 cases have ended in final report and 147 cases are still pending investigation.
Earlier raising the short-duration discussion, Trinamool Congress MLA George B Lyngdoh said the people are no longer surprised with the number of coal-laden trucks plying across the state.
He said that despite the ban on transportation of coal, people are seeing trucks turning turtle everywhere and questioning the involvement of high and low levels people.
