SHILLONG, Sep 24: The opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) Meghalaya on Saturday corned the state government for not appointing teachers in the government primary schools despite the availability of qualified individuals.
“Why in spite of having qualified and eligible teachers, have the teachers in the government primary schools not been appointed?” questioned leader of the opposition Mukul Sangma.
According to the Leader of the Opposition, the government is depriving the children in the villages of the right to education by not appointing the teachers.
The Minister in-charge Education, Lahkmen Rymbui, had recently stated that there are 36 lower primary schools in the state while he was speaking on the floor of the House during the just concluded Autumn Session of the Assembly.
South Garo Hills has 16 LP schools without teachers, followed by East Garo Hills with 10 schools and Khasi Hills region has five while in the Jaintia Hills districts there are four.
The minister had cited various reasons like superannuation and transfer for the posts falling vacant, while also asserting that the process of recruitment has started.
He also said the state government is following the High Court order for roster system in recruitment of teachers.
Moreover, Rangsakona MLA from TMC Zenith Sangma had also urged the Education department to urgently appoint teachers on a contractual basis in government LP schools to allow the children to continue their education.
