SHILLONG, Oct 12: Action by the state government in relation to the recent use of tear gas on protesting teachers who were marching to the Secretariat here will be taken after the report being prepared by the district administration is submitted, according to Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui.
“We have sought the report from the district administration since Friday last. The report has not reached me. Necessary action will be taken accordingly once the report is made available to me,” Rymbui said on Wednesday.
Action will be taken on all matters that go beyond the law, he said. Asserting that it is important to understand the situation, the Home Minister said the government will not protect anyone or hide anything. “But we need to follow due process of the law before taking any action,” he added.
Earlier on Tuesday, president of UDP East Khasi Hills Titosstarwell Chyne had asserted that the party has taken a serious note of the use of tear gas on the teachers, among who were women as well. The senior UDP leader also condemned the police action against the protesting teachers. “We are upset with the incident and we condemn the action taken by the police,” Chyne said, while adding that the party has decided to wait as they were told by the Home Minister that a report has been sought on the matter.
The UDP leader has held the district administration responsible for its alleged failure to take stock of the situation.
