GUWAHATI, Oct 24: Over 50 eminent doctors from the Northeast participated in a brainstorming session at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) on Sunday to understand issues and challenges to start the PA Sangma International Medical College and Hospital — an initiative of USTM and ERD Foundation, Guwahati.
The session was organised by USTM on various aspects with an objective to share suggestions from healthcare experts so that healthcare initiatives can be taken care of by the university in their upcoming project.
The session began with a presentation by Mahbubul Hoque, founder chancellor of USTM and the visionary behind the upcoming project. Welcoming the doctors, Hoque said during the initial two years, experts will be involved in healthcare seminars, workshops, conferences, training sessions organised by USTM.
He further said that there would be collaboration with healthcare institutions and doctors of all districts of the Northeast would be connected though healthcare activities and specialised training outside the country.
Presenting a timeline for construction of the project, Hoque stated that the construction of the hospital would be completed by July 2024.
“Commencement of hospital activities will take place by October 2024 while classes for the first batch of MBBS are expected to commence from August 2025,” he said.
The doctors present in the brainstorming offered valuable suggestions regarding the medical project and showed interest in being associated with the noble healthcare mission.
Knowing that USTM was also coming up with an ayurvedic and naturopathy college very soon, they suggested that the USP of the medical college could be the integrated treatment on the same campus. All the doctors were appreciative of this healthcare initiative at USTM.
It may be mentioned that the foundation for the project was laid by Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on October 3.
One of the main features of the medical college and hospital is a 250-bed super speciality hospital with all kinds of technological facilities and cutting-edge research.
