SHILLONG, Oct 28: FKJGP president Dundee Cliff Khongsit on Friday asked the state government to immediately fill up more than 7,000 posts lying vacant in various departments.
Addressing a public meeting at Madan Iewrynghep (Fire Brigade) after a rally on the problem of youth unemployment, Khongsit cited an RTI application to claim 7,653 posts were are lying vacant.
He said the state government should take steps to fill up these posts in the best interest of the unemployed youth of the state.
The FKJGP president slammed Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for providing misleading information in the Assembly by claiming there are only 3,000 posts lying vacant. “A CM saying so is not unacceptable,” he said.
Khongsit said the chief minister had told the FKJGP that the vacant posts could not be filled by the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) and the District Selection Committees (DSC) since they are understaffed.
According to him, the government is trying to shift the responsibility to the MPSC and DSCs.
“Why did the government not take steps to address the shortage of manpower and fill up the posts of the members of the MPSC and DSC?” he asked.
The dilly-dallying points to the government taking in people through the backdoor, he said. “We demand the immediate implementation of the State Employment Policy,” Khongsit said.
KSU president Lambokstar Marngar said the state government needs to address the growing frustration among the youth due to the lack of employment opportunities.
“I fear many of the youth will take up arms if they see that their future is very bleak. We cannot allow this situation to worsen,” Marngar said.
According to him, there are serious irregularities in the appointment process in the MPSC and DSCs.
“It is really sad that one needs to pay money in order to get a job in the government sector. It is an open secret that there is no transparency in the recruitment process in both the MPSC and DSCs,” he said.
Marngar said they will not allow illegal activities in the MPSC or DSCs.
Others who spoke on the occasion included HNYF president Sadon K Blah.
