SHILLONG, Nov 14: KAM Meghalaya leader Angela Rangad, who is all set to lock horns with Sanbor Shullai in South Shillong constituency in the upcoming Assembly elections, has said that the sitting MLA, despite his electoral dominance, is not invincible.
Speaking to the media persons here, Rangad said that no one, not even a senior politician, is invincible.
“People will speak and they need much more than what this constituency has seen and we will do it,” she said.
Reacting to money power dictating votes, Rangad appealed to the voters to think wisely while exercising their franchise.
“We don’t believe in buying people and their worth is much more than what they are being paid once,” she said, adding that people need better governance.
Reacting to provision of basic amenities ahead of the elections, Rangad said, “Drinking water should not come in the last year. Even the street lights should have been lit years ago and not just before the elections.”
During the day, KAM Meghalaya also launched its campaign anthem, Ka Kam Kan Ialam, which affirms the power of a united people for democratic progress, justice, and inclusiveness in Meghalaya.
The anthem was released by 93-year-old Pheril Kharsyntiew from Malki, who is also the grandmother of East Shillong KAM Meghalaya candidate Wanpynhun Kharsyntiew and Octogenarian Amy Rangad from Laban, who is the eldest aunt of Kam Meghalaya candidate Angela Rangad.
The anthem rallies around KAM’s three candidates for the upcoming elections, viz. Angela Rangad (South Shillong), Wanpynhun Kharsyntiew (East Shillong) and Kyrsoibor Pyrtuh (North Shillong).
“Written by Kampher Mark Swer, the anthem is a litany of possibilities of the power of people united around KAM that can create a just Meghalaya. ‘Kam’ is a word in many languages, including Khasi and Garo, which means ‘work’. Even though the song laments injustice meted out by the powerful on working people and the destruction of the state’s indigenous social fabric by the political class, the song is about the reversal of power and change that can happen when people are united,” a statement in this regard said.
