MAWKYRWAT, Nov 28: Invigorating the regional front which is amassing strength to trounce the ruling NPP in Meghalaya in the upcoming Assembly polls, leaders and supporters of the NPP and Congress from Mawthanrew village in South West Khasi Hills joined the United Democratic Party (UDP) Ranikor unit.
The programme to welcome the leaders and supporters was held in Rangthong village, South West Khasi Hills.
Addressing the gathering, Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein claimed that many leaders and supporters of the NPP from Warsan Lyngdoh area have joined the UDP. He said he learned from the leaders that many others from Mawmerang village and villages along the border areas will also join the party soon.
“This (joining of supporters from other political parties) shows that the people of the constituency have seen the work that we have done and the changes in these four years, especially the development and the transparency in distributing the MLA schemes,” Marwein said, adding that the UDP is ready for the elections and has high hopes of winning.
President of the UDP Ranikor Circle, GG Bung Snaitang, on the other hand, took a dig at Congress candidate Victorealness Syiemlieh, a nurse from Rangthong village who recently received the National Florence Nightingale Award, 2021.
Snaitang alleged that the motive of her candidature was to split the vote bank of the UDP because her entry into politics was late and “if she had to work day and night without sleeping, she will not reach all 232 villages in Ranikor Constituency”.
“But this attempt will not affect the UDP because our party keep on increasing day by day,” Snaitang said.
