SHILLONG, Dec 2: Desertions have begun and the state’s political spectrum seems to be changing as we inch closer to polls. Acting its part, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is approaching many sitting MLAs in Meghalaya to rope them two months ahead of elections; but is it too little too late a move for the BJP?
The party, in the last few months, has approached several sitting MLAs including suspended Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh and TMC president Charles Pyngope and discussions are reportedly on with them. Moreover, another TMC leader George Lyngdoh, who was also approached, is known to have rejected the offer.
While Ampareen Lyngdoh said that there is no harm in meeting any party, Charles Pyngope on Friday clarified that no media persons contacted him for his views on the move of the BJP to approach him, while also making it clear that it is not that he refused to speak to the media.
Meanwhile, some MLAs, who wished to remain anonymous, said the BJP is too late in its move to approach MLAs in Meghalaya asking of them to jump the ships.
“If they had approached me six or eight months ago, I could have given the idea a thought, but they are approaching me now when elections are just few months away when I have already covered my constituency and have explained to my voters my future plans,” an MLA said.
