SHILLONG, Dec 8: A total of 481 habitations have already been connected out of the 602 habitations, sanctioned for connectivity under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), in Meghalaya.
This was informed by DoNER Minister G Kishan Reddy in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
According to the union minister, a total length of 169.51 km of roads has been sanctioned under various schemes of the ministry during the last three years in Meghalaya.
He said those schemes have been implemented either directly or through North Eastern Council (NEC).
Reddy said that even the Department of Border Management, Ministry of Home Affairs, has undertaken 992 projects in the Northeastern region (NER), including Meghalaya, under ‘Road & Bridges’ sector, from 2014 to 15.
He said the NER is the focus area of the RCS-UDAN (Regional Connectivity Scheme – Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik), launched to facilitate and stimulate regional air connectivity.
Under the scheme, 18 routes in the NER are operational.
“The Ministry of Railways has also upgraded its infrastructure in the Northeast by way of gauge conversion, introduction of Vista Dome coaches and upgrading of stations,” he said.
For giving a fillip to tourism in the NER, the ministry approved the project ‘Development of View Points in the North East Region’ at 22 scenic locations, he added.
