SHILLONG, Dec 13: Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), under the banner of the Federation of Persons with Disabilities, has moved the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) against Congress candidate from Sohiong, Seth Osborn Kharjana, for his remark against differently-abled people.
In a letter to chairman of MHRC on December 9, the Federation general secretary Ibadalin Kharbuli said that the Congress candidate, in his speech, had made an offensive remark, stating that one should not elect a person who is blind, deaf or dumb to be the headman/chief of any village.
“We are looking forward from your end to take stern actions against him as he has violated the provision of chapter II & XVI provided in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016,” Kharbuli said.
Stating that in order to prevent individuals or groups from marginalising them, she urged upon the MHRC to take cognisance of the matter at the earliest and take necessary action.
Earlier, the Federation had asked Kharjana to tender an apology for his remarks against the differently-abled people.
