SHILLONG, Dec 13: As traffic woes continue unabated in the state capital with no immediate solution in sight, former Meghalaya police officer and BJP leader Mariahom Kharkrang has once again stressed on the need to construct flyovers in the city.
It may be mentioned that the state government had mooted construction of flyovers years ago. However, the plan never materialised.
Reacting to the ever-increasing traffic congestion, Kharkrang said the same is usually found in North Shillong.
He also said he doubts if the successive governments have taken any steps to address the issue.
Referring to the time when the parking lot was being constructed in MUDA, Kharkrang said he, in his capacity as the Superintendent of Police (City), had suggested that commercial shops should not be constructed there as they would take up the entire parking space.
My suggestion, however, was not heeded, Kharkrang said, adding that even now in the parking lot on GS Road opposite to the SBI, shops are being constructed.
He said there is hardly any space for parking vehicles due to the construction of shops.
“There is no other way (traffic issues can end) until we have a fly over,” he said, pointing out that more parking lots should be constructed in Shillong.
He also suggested that the government should lay focus on improving the walkways for pedestrians.
“People would like to walk if you provide them a nice and pleasing walkway instead of bumpy walkways,” Kharkrang said.
