TURA, Dec 16: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday inaugurated the much-awaited football stadium at the PA Sangma Sports Complex, Dakopgre, in Tura during a massive function at the venue.
The upgrade of the stadium, which has a great historical significance for having witnessed the Tura Football League and Subroto Cup, has been a mammoth undertaking by the state government.
The stadium is a technological marvel, being the country’s largest pre-engineered composite football stadium with a sizeable seating capacity of 9,500.
The stadium is part of an equally magnificent Sports Complex built at a cost of Rs 127.7 crore, which is also nearing completion.
The football stadium and the two indoor stadiums cover an area of over 17,000 sqms.
The indoor stadiums, equipped with gymnasium, swimming pool, table tennis hall, squash hall and badminton hall, will be ready for inauguration by December 2023.
During the inaugural programme, a bust of PA Sangma was also unveiled.
Other highlights of the programme include an exhibition football match between the Meghalaya State Team and North East United Football Club and performance by local bands and freestyle artistes.
