SHILLONG, Dec 26: The BJP in Meghalaya has started approaching people to get their views and suggestions on issues and agenda so they could be incorporated into its 2023 election manifesto.
As part of the exercise, senior BJP leader David Kharsati on Monday met Nongrim Hills Rangbah Shnong Bantylli L Narry to seek his views on some important issues.
Kharsati said the party’s state leaders will meet civil society leaders and groups to have a clear idea on the most important issues which need the state’s immediate attention.
“We want a manifesto that is people-centric. Therefore, we will need feedback from the citizens,” the BJP leader said.
Narry said the state government is yet to recognise the traditional institutions, such as the Dorbar Shnongs, by way of legislation.
According to him, the government remembers the Dorbar Shnongs only when it requires their services, especially when there is a breakdown of law and order.
“The Dorbar Shnongs had also played a significant role during the two years of Covid-19 pandemic but they did not get the recognition for the services they rendered,” Narry said.
He said one should not forget that the Dorbar Shnongs are the only institutions which still get the trust and support of people.
He lamented that despite being akin to Panchayats, the Dorbar Shnongs do not receive direct funding as in the case of the Panchayat system.
“We are dependent on local MLAs for the developmental needs of localities. It will be a good thing if special funds are granted to the Dorbar Shnongs to cater to the welfare and needs of their residents in terms of development and creation of civic amenities,” he added.
