Tura, Jan 4: The Government Branch Press Industrial Employees’ Association (GBPIEA) on Wednesday, urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to put on hold the proposed construction of the State Convention Centre, inside the compound of the Printing and Stationer Office in Tura on grounds that most of the buildings are in dire need of replacement.

“The building where sophisticated machines are currently installed has been damaged irreparably. The present building also does not have proper rooms as per Industrial requirements including for storage of raw and finished materials. The materials are currently stored wherever space is available,” the association in its memorandum given to the Chief Minister.

According to the association, apart from the materials getting damaged due to the leaking roof and termites, the building also is a health hazard to the employees due to its dampness. Several intimations given to the authorities, the association claimed, has resulted in mere assurances without any further action.

The association in the memorandum also raised the issue of insufficient vehicle parking space, the demand for additional three staff quarters for Deputy Director, Assistant Director and Foreman, which was earlier raised with the department authorities.
