RED FLAG! A damaged portion of a road near
Nongsohphoh committee hall poses threat to both
pedestrians and vehicles. Residents of the locality have flagged the issue but the same has fallen
on deaf ears of the authorities.

Hello, New Shillong Township
A once-aloof part of Shillong, the New Shillong Township has finally started to become relevant. Apart from NEIGRIHMS, which is located near there, everything else in New Shillong Township was disinteresting some years ago. Lately, new infrastructure such as the new Assembly building, IT Park, IIM Shillong and others, have begun attracting people’s attention.
Multiple hotels have also come up in the area. A general opinion about the region when it comes to commerce is that it has potential and it will attract different business opportunities in the future.
Bikers have also taken to visiting New Shillong Township for brisk rides, for one reason mainly — traversing the roads there is a delight.
The road condition in New Shillong Township is excellent so much so that vehicles almost glide.
However, it had only materialised recently. Before that, the road there was a downright menace.
When travelling to New Shillong Township, you’ll find a milestone near NEIGRIHMS that says ‘Diengpasoh 16 km’.
There is an interesting observation made by a resident of Mawdiangdiang — the milestone was earlier flawed, apparently.
Earlier, the milestone read ‘Mawkasiang 1 km’. “This was interesting to me because I travel there almost daily and it (Mawkasiang) is not a kilometre away from NEIGRIHMS,” the local told the SJ team.
He said the milestone was recently replaced with another, this time with distance to Diengpasoh.
“Anyway, we use Google Maps to navigate anywhere these days. But milestones are still instrumental and they need to give the right information,” he said.
As Shillongites, New Shillong Township is a welcome step and hopefully in the coming days, it will pave the way for overall development of the state.
