SHILLONG, Jan 17: Chairman of Congress Election Screening Committee and Assam MP, Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday said the list of party candidates is like a breath of fresh air for the people frustrated with the same set of politicians who end up being turncoats and fail to live up to their expectations.
“This is a great opportunity for the people of Meghalaya to see new candidates. People in the past have seen many leaders jumping from one political party to another and during elections, many of these people come with a lot of promises but fail to deliver them,” he said.
“Many in the current government are among such leaders,” Gogoi, in the state with other AICC leaders to hold discussions with the probable Congress candidates, said.
“There were a lot of expectations from this government formed in 2018, but they failed the people. I think this gives the voters an opportunity to look at new people with new ideas. I feel it brings a lot of positive energy and optimism to our camp,” he said.
The Assam MP said the purpose of his visit to the state is to meet with the probable candidates for the upcoming elections, assess the situation on the ground, the mood of the people, and the strength of the organisation for performing well.
“We are quite optimistic with the response we have had. All our candidates are gung-ho and ready to fight the elections. We are just awaiting the announcement of the official dates from the Election Commission,” Gogoi said, patting the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee for preparing a “fantastic campaign”.
He said the party would be looking at the records of the people who are applying and consult senior leaders before coming out with the list of candidates.
Gogoi said a team of Congress leaders have been travelling across the state interacting with the people to gather information about what the young and the old in Meghalaya need.
“I often hear about the challenges the people of Meghalaya are facing, which is highly unfortunate,” he said, insisting the AICC would approve and announce the names of the kind of candidates who can help overcome the challenges.
