SHILLONG, Feb 6: BJP legislator AL Hek on Monday did not rule out the possibility of becoming the next chief minister if the BJP forms the government. He also claimed that high-level corruption took place in the state and all the reports about it were sent to the BJP’s central leadership and the Prime Minister’s Office.
Hek promised action and CBI inquiry within six months against those involved in corruption if the BJP forms the government.
“I am assuring that no one involved in corruption will be spared,” he said, adding his opponent would continue to find faults with everything he does in the constituency.
“Meghalaya needs a double engine government. Delhi Modi Sarkar and Meghalaya Modi Sarkar with AL Hek as the chief minister,” he told reporters after filing his nomination.
When asked if he is projecting himself as the CM candidate, Hek, however, said, “Who am I to project? There has to be a consensus.”
Reacting to his remarks, BJP’s South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai said, “He cannot say that he will be the CM. I cannot say that I will be the CM. This is very wrong. BJP is a national party and everything is decided by the party high command.”
Earlier, accompanied by Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, Hek went to file his nomination along with a large number of his supporters who were seen singing and dancing.
Incidentally, Singh did not endorse the State BJP’s relentless rant on the issue of corruption in Meghalaya under the MDA and instead claimed that Meghalaya was a shining example of development model. He pointed out that the state was earlier known for corruption.
“Before Narendra Modi came to power in 2014, we did not have any railway connectivity here, not even a proper airport. Then, miraculous transformation took place in the state,” Singh claimed.
Expressing confidence that BJP will secure an absolute majority, he said Congress was creating a wrong perception and spreading propaganda about BJP.
He dismissed the claim of a ticket aspirant from North Shillong about cash-for-vote scam. He said some aspiring candidates make such accusations out of anger. He said the BJP allots tickets on the basis of merit and hard work and not dynasty.
Asked about the instances of corruption in the MDA, he said wherever BJP feels something is happening, course correction is taken.
On the charge that BJP is anti-Christian, he said such accusations are made only during elections. He claimed BJP gives equal attention to everyone and has done more for the Christians than any other party.
