NONGSTOIN, Feb 15: Songs and dances are almost synonymous with electioneering in Meghalaya. This is especially true when it comes to the rural areas where tribal folks attired in traditional clothes sing and dance as a mark of respect for the celebrated public leaders.
On Wednesday, Chief Minister and NPP chief Conrad Sangma paratrouped himself at remote Shallang area of Mawshynrut constituency to mobile support of the sizeable Garo voters who are residents of the coal rich area.
During the hour-long show, Sangma was greeted by Garo damsels amidst the familiar drum beats of the community.
While addressing the audience he eulogised the track record of the sitting MLA Gigur Myrthong who served the people with “passion and transparency”.
The formalities being over, Sangma stepped out of the podium to join the community in a group dance that roused the audience to ecstasy.
Later the chief minister tweeted saying, “Danced with the people at Shallang in Mawshynrut Constituency as the NPP claims its victory for 2023”.
The NPP candidate from Mawshynrut, Gigur Myrthong enjoys fair measure of people’s support. The CM Minister claimed that NPP’s win in Mawshynrut is now a certainty.  And he danced exuberantly as if in advance celebration.
Earlier, the CM was accorded a rousing reception as he landed at a temporary helipad in Shallang and marched to the meeting venue.
He reiterated that NPP is heading for an absolute majority and there is no point in “wasting votes” on other political parties.
Myrthong stressed on the need to set up proper educational institutes in Mawshynrut, and assured that he would bring a peoples’ college in the area besides attending to other developmental activities if he is re-elected.
