SHILLONG, Feb 17: The BJP has vowed to ensure inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule, if voted to power in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Speaking to media persons here, BJP national general secretary Rituraj Sinha said that people of Meghalaya have a rich culture with the Khasi and Garo languages having hundreds of years of cultural value. He then emphasised that these languages must get recognition.
The party will do its best to ensure that this aspiration of the people sees the light of day, if the party gets the adequate number of seats in the polls. “We will move this in the assembly and work in close coordination with the Centre in this regard,” he said,” he said.
On being reminded that the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly including two BJP legislators have unanimously passed a resolution to include the two languages in the Eighth Schedule, he said that BJP had only two seats in the Assembly which is not a “dominant role”. “When we are in a dominant role in the Meghalaya assembly with greater influence, we will be able to take it to Delhi and see this through,” Sinha said.
