Fresh pre-poll violence in Phulbari

SHILLONG, Feb 16: A fresh case of violence involving TMC and NPP workers was reported from Phulbari on Wednesday, a late report said on Thursday.
A police source said that Phulbari Police received information that some TMC workers led by one Sofiqul Islam @Bhutto had allegedly assaulted some NPP workers.
When a police team led by SDPO, Dadenggre rushed to the spot they found two injured persons who claimed that they had been assaulted by Sofiqul Islam.
Based on their statement, the accused was detained and taken into police custody after which a mob gheraoed the police team and in the ensuing melee, the accused fled.
Police also detained another person who was allegedly inciting the mob but the mob took away the detained person, the source said.
Police later took the two injured persons to Phulbari CHC where two more injured persons, including a minor girl, came to the CHC on their own. While three of the injured suffered simple injuries, the minor was referred to higher centre for suspected fracture in leg.
Police have filed to cognizable cases but no one has been arrested as yet.
An official said, CAPF has been deployed in the area and situation is under control. “Peace committee meeting shall be held today. Intensive area domination exercises shall be carried out to ensure that such incidents do not occur in future,” the official said.
