HDR no more, polling in Sohiong deferred

SHILLONG, Feb 20: The Assembly polls in Meghalaya will be held in 59 seats with the sudden demise of UDP’s Sohiong candidate, H. Donkupar Roy Lyngdoh.
A former home minister, he passed away at the Bethany Hospital on Monday after a cardiac arrest.
Lyngdoh lost the Sohiong seat as a Congress candidate in 2018. He joined the UDP ahead of the announcement of the February 27 elections.
“Report recommending adjournment of polls has been received from DEO enclosing the RO’s report. The CEO has recommended the adjournment of polls to ECI. Polls will be conducted in 59 out of 60 ACs. Adjourned poll date in respect of Sohiong AC will be announced by ECI at a later date,” Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor said.
The UDP and other political parties mourned the death of Lyngdoh, who was popularly known as Maheh. “Today, we mourn the loss of an exceptional individual. A former minister and UDP candidate, Bah Lyngdoh’s legacy of selfless service and dedication to the community will continue to inspire us for years to come. May his soul rest in peace,” UDP general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh tweeted.
“Saddened by the sudden demise of former minister and senior politician of the state, Shri H.D.R. Lyngdoh. Shri Lyngdoh served the state in different capacities over the years & was a dedicated leader to the people. His demise is a great loss to Meghalaya. May his soul rest in peace,” Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said in a tweet.
“I am deeply shocked and saddened by the news of the passing away of former home minister & senior political leader, Shri HDR Lyngdoh. He had contributed to the state and dedicated himself to serving the people in several ways possible. I extend my deepest sympathies to the bereaved family. May God provide them comfort in this time of grief and may his soul rest in peace,” NPP leader James PK Sangma said.
Senior politician and the NPP’s Phulbari candidate, AT Mondol conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family. NPP legislator Wailadmiki Shylla also mourned Lyngdoh’s death.
