SHILLONG, Feb 21: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured the citizens of providing “full security” to all sections of the society in Meghalaya.
Shah, who was scheduled to address two public rallies in Shillong on Tuesday, could not land here due to poor visibility. As a compensation he addressed a sizeable gathering at Cantonment ground using his mobile set.
The phone call which he made from Guwahati airport, was amplified for the benefit of the large audience who had gathered to hear him.
Appealing to the voters to give mandate to BJP, Shah’s assurance of protection is apparently directed towards the non-tribal voters who are often subjected to unprovoked assaults with scanty mitigation from the authorities. Saying that BJP government will provide security to every individual in the state, he added in a tone of reassurance: “After the formation of the BJP government, no one would be afraid.”
As a confidence building measure, he further pointed out that security is being provided by BJP governments to people in many states including Assam.
The statement of Shah is seen by many as a move to appease the non-tribals who constitute the core of BJP vote bank in Meghalaya.
Earlier, Shah said that the BJP wants to develop Meghalaya on the lines of Assam model only.
Stating that the objective of BJP is to make Meghalaya a corruption-free and dynasty-free state, he added that in case he is unable visit Shillong before February 27, he will definitely be part of victory celebration on March 2.
Earlier, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra slammed former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh saying he visited Northeast only two times during his tenure to cast his vote while Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the region almost 60 times, and has given wings to the Act East Policy of the Government of India.
“Today NE means the ‘New-Engine’ of Growth of India, and the NE was ‘Non-Existent’ under the Congress,” Patra said while terming TMC as a corrupt and communal party from Bengal which wants to divide Meghalaya and import citizens.
“Peace and Prosperity, he said were the two Ps of the BJP that will drive development in Meghalaya, and we can trust only the BJP to bring this to the state. “The NPP, TMC and Congress also believe in 2 Ps – Paisa (money) and Pariwar (their own family),” he added.
At Golf Links, Union Minister John Barla spoke about the inclusive governance and development policies of the PM Modi led BJP government.
He stated that only the BJP has worked to actually empower the tribals and the minority communities of the state and the country, and has never planned to keep them dependent like the Congress did.
He said that it is the determination of the BJP to ensure that the last person, the most deprived, is uplifted and empowered first, and in the implementation of this vision, the BJP has never and will never discriminate between people on the basis of their age, gender, religion, caste, etc.
A former pastor of the Church, John Barla spoke about his humble background and about how PM Modi elevated him to his current position of responsibility. He said that during Covid, when political parties disappeared from public, it was Modi who stood fast with the people and provided them with free ration and vaccination.
The venue was packed to capacity, and the people cheered the speakers on and occasionally burst aloud slogans in favour of the BJP and PM Modi.
