BSF troops thwart smuggling bid, nab Indian nationals
SHILLONG, Feb 22: Troops of BSF Meghalaya Frontier on Tuesday night foiled a cattle-smuggling bid along the Indo-Bangladesh border in East Khasi Hills, and arrested two Indian nationals in this regard. According to a statement, the BSF personnel, while acting on a tip-off, set up a mobile check post on Mawsynram-Nongtrai axis near village Ryngku and intercepted three cattle-laden vehicles. A total of 16 cattle were crammed in the vehicles. Subsequently, two people were arrested in this connection while another managed to flee the scene. It was also informed that the arrested cattle smugglers are residents of Nongtrai village, East Khasi Hills. In another incident, the BSF Meghalaya troops also seized 100 bottles of Phensedyl from the bordering area of East Khasi Hills.
Man ‘assaulted’ by 6; plaint filed
TURA, Feb 22: An individual from Nandirchar under Mahendraganj was allegedly assaulted by six people inside a farmhouse located behind a petrol pump in the area. In his complaint filed with Mahendraganj Police Station on Wednesday, the victim, identified as one Halim Miah, alleged that he was forced inside a vehicle (AS 01 G 7494) by the occupants, who took him to the farmhouse and assaulted him. A total of 6 persons have been named by the victim in his complaint. Miah has sought an inquiry into the matter as well as action against the accused.
SHG members take voters’ pledge
TURA, Feb 22: A SVEEP activity – A Pledge in a Flag — was on Tuesday organised by the Office of the District Election Officer, South Garo Hills, in collaboration with NRLM at Dubagre village during which members of Jakusan took a pledge in a flag made with cloth to come out and cast their vote on February 27. The programme was attended by General Observer Manoj Kumar, during which he encouraged the women-led self-help groups to work together and urge their fellow villagers to come out and vote in the upcoming elections. He even requested the SHG members to make full use of their strong network. During the programme, SHG members wrote a voters’ pledge on the flag and signed their initials. The same activity will also take place across the SHG network within the district and on the eve of poll day, all the signed flags will be exhibited at Simsang bridge displaying the unity of SHG women of the South Garo Hills.
