MAWKYRWAT, Feb 22: NPP said political parties, including its allies in the MDA, are attacking it as they fear it might rise to power again after the February 27 elections.
“The election campaign this time is very different. All political parties and also independent candidates are attacking only the NPP. To our surprise, even the coalition partners, who were sleeping under the blanket provided by the NPP in these 5 years but have now come out, are attacking the NPP,” the party’s national vice president, Prestone Tynsong said.
He made the statement at an election rally at Pongkung village under Mawsynram constituency in the East Khasi Hills district on Tuesday evening.
He claimed that it was clear from his visits to various constituencies in Garo, Khasi and Jaintia Hills that the NPP will retain power by securing an absolute majority.
“Support NPP because it is clear we will win not less than 32-33 seats and rule alone,” Tynsong told the crowd confidently.
“If you don’t support our candidate, you will lose all the developmental schemes because after forming the government, we will put them at the top of the bus, but if our candidate Albin K Sawkmie wins, he will drive the bus together with us,” Tynsong said.
He said the state government has carefully studied the demand to upgrade the Mawsynram C&RD block to a civil subdivision, and what is left is the publication of the notification, pending due to polls.
Tynsong lambasted some politicians for lying to general public by promising heaven on earth. He said it is right for most people of the state to say that “all politicians are liars”.
“Ten people lie but all of us, who are calm and do not know anything, were classed in the same category,” he lamented.
