Shillong, March 22: Shreyas Iyer, a middle order batsman and captain of Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, is set to undergo a surgery for his back injury.
Iyer, who is out of action due to injury since the Border-Gavaskar Trophy final day in 2023, is anticipated to have surgery under the strict supervision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) either in London or elsewhere in India.
Iyer was asked to have surgery during his third consultation with a doctor in Mumbai. Iyer will be unable to play for at least five months after the surgery, it has been learnt, which means he will miss important events like the World Test Championship Final against Australia and the Indian Premier League, which will start on March 31.
Iyer’s injury is the second significant one for India since the 2022 T20 World Cup, when Jasprit Bumrah went out of action due to back problem. Jasprit Bumrah’s condition is still not known.
Iyer’s absence will have significant repercussions for IPL team KKR, who acquired him for a staggering Rs 12.25 crores and made him captain in 2022. With less than 10 days left in the season, KKR will now need to scramble to find another batsman and a captain.
