Only one residential school has been built so far: Meghalaya minister

Shillong, March 22: Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma today informed that only one residential school in the state has been completed.

He was replying to a question from Congress MLA, Saleng A Sangma in the State Assembly.

It was also informed that 18 other residential schools were yet to be completed.

Some of the locations where residential schools are being set up are Thadlaskein, Amlarem,Chokpot, Gambegre,Rongjeng,Shella Bholaganj, Mawsynram,Ranikor, Umsning etc,.

Ekalavya model residential schools are to be set up in 36 blocks of Meghalaya at the cost of Rs 20 crore each. The project of constructing the 36 schools is expected to be completed in three years.

The construction of these schools is in line with the government’s commitment to provide the best quality education to the tribal children in their own environment.

Ekalavya schools will be on par with Navodaya Vidyalayas and will have special facilities for preserving local art and culture besides providing training in sports and skills.
