SWKH fish farmers asked to increase production, supply
MAWKYRWAT, March 22: South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner T Lyngwa on Wednesday encouraged the fish farmers from the district to increase the production and supply so as to reduce the dependence on the fish from outside the state. Addressing the inaugural programme of the 7th District Level Industrial Exhibition & Aqua Fest as the chief guest, Lyngwa expressed hope that the contribution of the entrepreneurs will keep on increasing with the passage of time. “Though we don’t have big industries, but through the items that we produce, we can help solve the problem of unemployment and help improve the economy of the state, besides helping our families,” the DC said. It may be organised that the programme is being organised by the Office of the General Manager, District Commerce & Industries Centre, in collaboration with the Office of the Superintendent of Fisheries, South West Khasi Hills District. Others who spoke include Superintendent of Fisheries, Mawkyrwat, OL Passah and General Manager District Commerce Industries Centre, Mawkyrwat, M War.

 

Fish kiosks and sanctuary inaugurated in WKH village
NONGSTOIN/MAIRANG, March 22: Fish kiosks and fish sanctuary were on Wednesday inaugurated at Laitkseh village in West Khasi Hills by Superintendent of Fisheries, WKH, ER Laloo, in the presence of beneficiaries, Laitkseh village headman, as well as officials and staff of the Fisheries department. Addressing the inaugural programme, ER Laloo informed that the fish kiosk is a hygienic fish market under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana 2021-22. He also said that the fish sanctuary was set up with an objective to preserve the indigenous fish species of the state. It may be mentioned that the fish sanctuary, located at Umnamlang River in Laitkseh village, has been taken up and looked after by a local group, viz. Laitkseh Area Fish Farmers Association. Meanwhile, in Eastern West Khasi Hills, two fish retail outlets, constructed under Centre’s Blue Revolution 2018-19, were on Wednesday inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner W. Nongsiej during a programme organised by the Office of the Fishery Officer, Eastern West Khasi Hills at Iew Langstieh, Mairang. Addressing the gathering, Nongsiej informed that the project was implemented by the Fisheries department. He expressed hope that the inauguration of the retail outlets will pave the way for other fish farmers of the district and all others connected with the fish supply chain to further upscale their productivity. Others who were part of the programme include Syiem of Hima Nongkhlaw, Pa’iem PM Syiemlieh; Myntris of the Hima; traditional heads; fish farmers, among others.
