SHILLONG, April 12: Marking the culmination of the ‘Purvottar Bharat Parikrama’ — Indian Army’s pan North East Car Rally, Governor Phagu Chauhan on Wednesday received the rally at Umroi Military Station.
The rally reached its final destination, Umroi Military Station, after travelling across nine states over a period of 20 days.
The car rally which was flagged off by Army Commander HQ Eastern Command, Lt Gen RP Kalit (PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM) on March 22 from Fort Williams, Kolkata, covered approximately 4000 km over 22 days and passed through scenic routes and arduous terrain of the Northeast. The rally visited various war memorials, conducted motivational talks at schools and colleges and explored many other historical locations of the Northeastern region.
Governor Chauhan felicitated the team leader, Brigadier KM Shende (Shaurya Chakra) and Subedar Major and Honorary Captain, Yogendra Singh Yadav (ParamVir Chakra) and lauded the efforts of the Indian Army in the service of the nation.
He also highlighted the superlative coordination between the Army and Civil Administration in Meghalaya and commended the efforts of the Army in assisting the ex-servicemen and veterans of the state.
The ‘Purvottar Bharat Parikrama’ car rally aimed to promote national unity, camaraderie and national integration among the people of Northeast India, bringing together different sections of society and build a “New India” that is stronger and more prosperous. It also focussed on enhancing awareness about the Indian Army and the Agniveer programme.
The event, conducted in collaboration with North Eastern Council under the Department of North Eastern Region as part of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”, was also a great platform to showcase the cultural diversity of Northeastern region and encourage tourism.
