Shillong, April 14: Police had tried to arrest Atiq Ahmed son Asad and his aide Ghulam alive, an FIR has stated.
An encounter broke out between police and the duo on Thursday after which the cops were forced to fire and kill both of them.
The FIR as per reports stated that the two Asad and Ghulam shot at the police first and were killed in retaliatory firing.
The police were informed, according to the FIR, that Ghulam and Asad were nearby and hiding. The statement read, “We received a tip-off that they were seen in Jhansi at night and may be in Chirgaon.
Deputy Superintendent Bimal Kumar Singh led a team to Barigaon and Parichha, and Navendu Kumar led a team to Chirgaon.
“We learned that Ghulam and Asad were riding a red and black Discover motorcycle without a valid license plate. They were travelling to Pariccha after leaving Chirgaon. In contrast to Ghulam, who had a handkerchief tied over his head and was wearing a dark green half-t-shirt, Asad was dressed in a white pathani suit with a black cap.
According to the report, “the team led by Bimal Kumar Singh was informed about Asad and Ghulam as soon as police received the information and was asked to come to Parichha immediately.”
Police asked Asad and Ghulam to stop their motorbike and surrender when they were seen. When they failed to comply, they accelerated the motorbike and came to a stop just before the Pariccha dam turning.
“Our personnel pursued the motorbike and made numerous attempts to stop them. By a tree, the motorbike slipped and collapsed. The police squad was shot at by Asad and Ghulam. Later both were injured in retaliatory firing.
Asad and Ghulam were found injured by the police and transferred to a hospital, where they died as a result of their wounds.
The two had Rs 5 lakh bounty placed on their heads as suspects in the murder of Umesh Pal. Since Umesh Pal was assassinated in February outside of his residence in February, Asad and Ghulam had been evading the police.
