Nongpoh, April 17:  Members of the Khasi Students Union (KSU), Nongpoh Circle have expressed their concern over the irregular shutdown of electricity in the district headquarter, Nongpoh and rest of Ri Bhoi district.

The Union members met with the Executive Engineer of the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL) on Monday to demand an explanation as to why electricity was being shut down without proper timing in the district, causing severe difficulties for the people.

According to the Union, the frequent shutdown of electricity even during morning, daytime, and evening has badly affected the offices, students, entrepreneurs, and people. The KSU Nongpoh Circle General Secretary, Baiashanlang Kharshanlor, informed the media that the Union is deeply concerned about the current situation and demanded that the shutdown of electricity should only occur during nighttime and not during the day when people need it the most.

The Union also conducted an inspection at Mawdaron in Saiden village after receiving complaints from local residents about the rusting of electricity posts, which they claimed put the lives of people in danger. The Union demanded that these rusted electricity posts should be replaced immediately as they pose a threat to the lives of the residents.

Kharshanlor informed the media that the Executive Engineer of the MePDCL Nongpoh Division has assured the Union members of taking necessary actions on the grievances raised by the Union. The Union hopes that the authorities will take immediate action to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the region, especially during the day when people need it the most.
