JOWAI, April 17: The traditional heads of Moojem village (Block-I) and Hynniewtrep Border Dispute Redressal Forum (HBDRF) on Monday called on West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner BS Sohliya over the alleged encroachment of the areas falling under Moojem Elaka Labang Nongphyllut by the Karbi population of Moothade, Karbi Anglong.
It has been alleged that the Karbi population of Moothade encroached into the areas falling under Iawmuksoo by taking up agricultural activities like plantation of broomstick, betel nuts and other agricultural produce.
The residents of Moojem village on April 15 came out in large numbers to destroy the broom stick plantation of the Karbi population.
The Karbi population of Moothade village then filed a complaint at Jrikyndeng Police Station, following which the villagers were summoned by the police on the same day.
While speaking to reporters, general secretary of the Dorbar Shnong of Moojem village, N. Sten, said that they have the necessary documents to prove that the land where the Karbi population had taken up agricultural activities falls under the village. According to him, there was an agreement among the villagers that broomstick cultivation will not be taken up since it will dry up the whole area.
Stating that this kind of incident had taken place even in the past, he said that they had arrived at a consensus that such things will not be repeated.
“But unfortunately, the Karbi population continues to encroach into the areas falling under the village,” Sten said.
He further informed that the DC has asked his counterpart and the SP of West Karbi Anglong district as well as the representative from Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council to come to Jowai and discuss the issue.
