Shillong, May 1: Amritpal Singh, a pro-Khalistan radical leader who was apprehended on April 23 following a month-long manhunt, has refused to disclose the sources of his money and poses a threat to peace and security, as per officials questioning him.
Amritpal Singh was detained by the Punjab Police and is currently being held at a maximum security facility in Dibrugarh, Assam.
Police sources said that the chief of the Waris Punjab De organisation and a supporter of Khalistan said after questioning that he would “not cross the line of criminality if let off” Amritpal Singh allegedly told the police that he could assist in the fight against the drug problem in Punjab.
“He’ll return and resume his previous activities. He has said he won’t go beyond the point of crime. He wants to continue fighting for a while. He also pledged to battle against narcotics and the conversion by missionaries” an investigator said.
Fears of the militancy that had plagued Punjab in the 1980s and early 1990s returned with the ascent of the radical preacher who has Khalistan sympathies and has successfully avoided arrest ever since he and a gang of armed supporters assaulted a police station in Amritsar.
