NONGSTOIN, May 3: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday said the resumption of coal mining is a historic moment for the state and the people, particularly those who are dependent on the coal mining.
He also people have suffered a lot due to the coal ban and even the government has lost a lot in terms of revenue in the last nine years but all of this is about to change.
He said the Union Ministry of Coal has provided approval for mining lease to four applicants that would lead to the commencement of scientific mining ensuring minimal environmental impact through sustainable and legally compliant extraction procedures.
Sangma also said that it will take another 45 to 60 days to officially start the process of scientific, safe and sustainable mining since the miners will have to apply for environmental clearances, pollution clearances and public consultations and other formalities within the state level.
The mining lease holders, who were granted approval to start scientific mining, organised a felicitation programme in recognition of the state government’s efforts to initiate scientific mining in Meghalaya.
Besides the chief minister, the function was also attended by Palash Chakrabarty of Novomine India Pvt Ltd, Ethelbert Kharmalki, Secretary of Mining and Geology Department and Shainingstar Khardewsaw and Teilang Pde, the two project proponents from West and South West Khasi Hills districts, among others.
