SHILLONG, May 7: The equation between MDA 2.0 coalition’s two main props — NPP and UDP — is getting strained by the day in the run-up to the deferred Sohiong Assembly poll.
As the two coalition partners find themselves locked in another bitter rivalry, the obvious contradictions are coming to the fore.
The UDP, which has unleashed some vitriolics against NPP, is drawing retaliation from the latter which has repeatedly told the former to quit the coalition if they were unhappy with them.
Interestingly, MDA spokesperson Ampareen Lyngdoh on Sunday made reference to the souring of relations between the two parties and warned against “crossing the line”.
She, however, stopped short of confirming if the UDP will be shunted out of the ruling coalition.
“I do not want to predict and I am not a pundit,” was all she said.
“It is unfortunate that we are part of the same government and experiencing this kind of situation. But it is a fact that the UDP has been on a war path in many elections with its allies including NPP despite being in the same alliance,” Lyngdoh, who is also the NPP spokesperson, told The Shillong Times.
“The moment you cross the line too much and you condemn each other within the same coalition it will not paint well in the eyes of the public. This may also affect their relationship,” she said.
Lyngdoh further stated that personally she would not like to indulge in such things adding that she will work hard to make sure that the NPP candidate wins.
While reacting to the ongoing war of words between the NPP and UDP in the Sohiong polls, Lyngdoh said that war of words and elections are synonymous with each other.
According to her, there will be no election without war of words.
“When we come down post elections so many other things will be happening. We are leaders of the state and we will take the state forward and try to remain unanimous, secure and provide strong government to the people so that we can lead the state forward and given them good things in the next five years,” she said.
She further stated she is a player and she would want her player to also win and also to score.
“I want to say my candidate is the best and he is going to win. Likely every other political party will say the same things. Let the result show whether predictions are more important or actual result is more relevant,” she added.
