World No Tobacco Day 2023 observed across GH, Ri-Bhoi
TURA/NONGPOH, May 31: Along with the rest of the world, the World No Tobacco Day was observed at Super Market Complex in Tura on Wednesday with the theme ‘My Meghalaya, Tobacco Free Meghalaya’. The programme was organised by National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), National Health Mission, West Garo Hills, Tura. Other districts of Garo Hills including East Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and North Garo Hills have also been organising various programmes and events including processions to mark the occasion. It may be mentioned that the annual World No Tobacco day campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of Tobacco use and this year the World Health Organisation (WHO) is focusing on preventing youth to quit smoking. Mentioning about the ill-effects of consuming tobacco and its products, the Additional Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills AVD Shira said that no one can change the decision of a person unless that person desires to change his mind and the same applies to the person consuming tobacco and related products. She also urged everyone, especially the youths to stay away from this and instead focus on career prospects that would help them achieve success in future. Moreover, the No Tobacco Signature Campaign was also organised for everyone during the function. In Ri-Bhoi, a total of 813 schools conducted rallies against tobacco in the district and 711,744 signatures were collected by 43,388 students, according to the District School Education Officer. The district winners include St Theresa LP School (Primary category), Lebiwel Memorial School (Upper Primary category), Stepup Secondary School (Secondary category), and Umroi Presbyterian Higher Secondary School (Higher Secondary category).
NEIAV Archive now part of international association
SHILLONG, May 31: The Northeast India AV Archive (NEIAV Archive) of the Department of Mass Media, St. Anthony’s College, has become an associate institutional member of Southeast Asia-Pacific Audiovisual Archive Association (SEAPAVAA). With this, NEIAV Archive is now the sole associate institutional member from the country. According to a statement here, NEIAV Archive’s inclusion in SEAPAVAA’s network will enhance its capacity to engage in global best practices, access cutting-edge resources, and participate in collaborative projects. The association will also empower NEIAV Archive to broaden its horizons and contribute to the collective efforts of preserving and promoting the audiovisual heritage of the Southeast Asia, Australasia, and Pacific Islands region.
Programme on holistic approach to cancer treatment
SHILLONG, May 31: The Meghalaya Medical Services Association (MMSA) in collaboration with Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute, Mumbai, on Wednesday organised a programme on ‘Holistic Approach to Cancer Treatment’ at the Shillong Club premises. According to a statement here, the programme included two technical sessions. In the first session, eminent oncologist, Dr. Manoj Mulchandani, gave detail presentation on advances in cancer surgery. The second session on advances in cancer surgery, on the other hand, was dealt by Director of Oncology Department of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Dr. Rajesh Mistry.
SBI makes push to drive insurance awareness in Meghalaya
SHILLONG, May 31: SBI General Insurance, one of the leading general insurance companies in India, has been identified by Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) as the lead insurer (Non-Life) for Meghalaya to improve insurance awareness and insurance penetration across the state. The initiative is intended to accelerate the implementation process of IRDAI’s mission ‘Insurance for All by 2047’ in the state through the State Insurance Plan and to ensure last-mile delivery of insurance services to the uninsured population of the state. In order to do this, a team of SBI General Insurance led by Deputy Managing Director Anand Pejawar and others visited Shillong and organised a series of activities. The delegation met Chief Secretary DP Wahlang and briefed him about the State Insurance Plan for Meghalaya and the initiatives taken by the insurance companies. Also, SBI General Insurance conducted a workshop in Shillong Club for staff members of State Bank of India and Meghalaya Rural Bank (MRB), to explain the concept and roadmap for Meghalaya State Insurance Plan. The workshop was attended by more than 100 staff members including Amit Kumar, DGM (B&O) Shillong, and Tshering Diki, Chairman, Meghalaya Rural Bank.
