BAGHMARA, June 8: In a major breach of international laws, two personnel belonging to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) intruded into Rongara Imbloka (Waek) village inside Meghalaya and harassed residents before they were pushed back through joint efforts of security forces and locals.
The intrusion caused a lot of consternation in the BSF camp who raised the issue immediately with BGB authorities.
The incident in question took place at about 3 pm on Wednesday when the two personnel, apparently in search of contraband, reached the village and launched a door-to-door search. When locals objected to the illegal search, they threatened them with their service guns.
A large number of locals gathered and accosted the BGB personnel leading to a heated exchange of word before they retreated but not before taunting the villagers.
Following the incident, residents informed the police and BSF officials.
A flag meeting was called between the two forces where the BGB leadership assured stringent action against the BGB personnel and to take care to prevent such occurrences in the future.
South Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Abraham Marak said, “We sent a team after we were informed of the incident. The matter has been taken up by the BSF and they would be the best people to answer questions. The situation for now is normal though a little tense.”
Meanwhile, Border Areas Development Minister Rakkam A. Sangma said the state government will take up the matter.
Terming the incident as unfortunate, he said he will seek a report from the SP.
