SHILLONG, June 12: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Rosetta Mary Kurbah has defended her decision to impose odd-even system for plying of local taxis, SSPTS maxi cabs and SPTC buses in Police Bazar and Motphran and vowed to go all out to impose the order from Tuesday.
Kurbah said there were several orders from the High Court of Meghalaya pertaining to the traffic jams and the decision was taken based on the orders of the High Court mentioning the two locations.
Claiming that the traffic situation has improved in these two locations after the odd-even system was implemented on June5, she added that the district administration did not implement the order strictly since the cabbies were planning to challenge the order in the High Court and she was waiting for a reaction.
Asked why the same formula was not being applied for private vehicles, Kurbah said the administration had conducted a study to find out the reason behind the congestion which revealed that private vehicles are on the move whereas local taxis stop and rotate in these two areas.
The DC also said the complaints regarding the cabbies charging rates that were introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic would be passed onto the Transport Department for necessary action.
