SHILLONG, June 12: Padma Shri Badaplin War has termed late Rev JJM Nichols Roy, as one of the tallest leaders among the Khasi community. Roy is also known as the Father of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
She was speaking at a function here on Monday to commemorate his 139th birth anniversary which was organised by Rev JJM Nichols Roy Memorial Committee and Rev JJM Nichols Roy College.
War recalled how Roy has several contributions to his name both as a Christian minister and as statesman.
Because of Roy’s efforts as a member of the Constituent Assembly, the various indigenous tribes of the Northeastern region are protected through Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, she said.
Talking about the title ‘Architect of the Sixth Schedule’ given to Roy, the Padma Shri awardee said that the legislation not only paved the way for creation of the Autonomous District Councils but it also provided protection to the rights and ownership of land of the indigenous community of the state.
Meanwhile, president of the governing body of JJM Nichols Roy College, Rev AC Moore, said that Rev Nichols Roy had propagated the ideology of true servant leadership.
“He was a leader who believes in Jesus Christ. Among the present generation, we talk about Jesus but people don’t see Jesus in their life, especially among the leaders,” Rev Moore said.
On the occasion, three students of Rev JJM Nichols Roy College were also felicitated. Others who were present include Rev JJM Nichols Memorial Committee chairman, Ransom Sutnga, students and other members of the committee.
