SHILLONG, June 27: Around 200 nurses working on a temporary basis at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences are staking at a bleak future after the institute decided to relieve them next month following the recruitment of permanent nurses.
NEIGRIHMS Director Prof Nalin Mehta told The Shillong Times on Tuesday that the institute had hired around 200 nurses through an outsourcing agency against the vacant positions which they had in the institute on temporary basis.
He said the institute had recently conducted an entrance examination to fill up around 200 vacant nursing posts and around 190 nurses have already joined service on a regular basis.
He said the concerned outsourcing agency has been intimated of the institute’s decision.
“The 200 nurses were aware of the terms and condition when they had joined service on temporary basis,” the Director said while adding that these nurses were allowed to sit for the entrance examination and some of them have cleared the test.
He also said that the institute will hire around 70 nurses in the next few months and the number of nurses hired through the outsourcing agency will be reduced.
Reacting to the development, former MLA of Mawlai PT Sawkmie expressed concern that around 200 nurses will become unemployed.
“A large number of families will be affected. I would like to appeal to the concerned outsourcing agency to impress upon the NEIGRIHMS Director to continue their services,” Sawkmie said.
He also urged the NEIGRIHMS Director to reconsider his decision and allow the nurses to continue with their jobs.
