Shillong, July 5: According to the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka has recorded a total of 50,264 dengue cases this year. The highest number of cases was reported in the densely populated Gampaha district. The Ministry’s Epidemiology Unit has identified 43 high-risk areas for dengue and is actively conducting mosquito eradication campaigns.
Tragically, there have been 31 deaths related to dengue reported thus far in 2023, highlighting the severity of the situation. The meteorology department has warned of heavy rainfall in the upcoming days, which could potentially facilitate mosquito breeding and further spread of the disease.
Last year, Sri Lanka had already experienced over 76,000 dengue cases, as per official data. The current figures emphasize the ongoing challenge the country faces in combating this mosquito-borne illness.
