Shillong, August 6: The Indian government has introduced state-of-the-art facial recognition and artificial intelligence mechanisms to regulate access to the new Parliament building. The gates of the building will be equipped with advanced facial recognition and scanning technology.

India Today reported that as part of the implementation, scans of Union ministers, Members of Parliament, and top officials have already been collected. This data enables the gates to automatically open as they approach within a six-meter radius of the entrances to the new Parliament building.

In addition to face scans, other biometric information, similar to that provided for passport renewals and creation, has been gathered from MPs. This serves as a backup in case the facial recognition system encounters any issues. In such cases, alternative methods like thumbprints or a unique PIN will be used for verification.

To further enhance security, smart cards similar to credit cards will be issued. These cards will utilize the Smart Card Operating System for Transport Applications (SCOSTA) and will be programmed to grant access only to personnel with appropriate security clearance for specific areas within the building. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is currently developing this encrypted data.

To maintain strict access control, the Prime Minister’s wing will be cordoned off, allowing only individuals with PMO clearance to enter. All these security measures will be seamlessly integrated into a local navigation system or a specially designed mobility app, facilitating easy navigation for visitors within the new Parliament building.
