SHILLONG, Aug 12: Beneficiaries of central government schemes from Meghalaya will witness the Independence Day celebrations at the historic Red Fort in New Delhi on August 15 as special guests.
Around 1,700 persons from across the country related to various flagship programmes such as Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojna, Amrit Sarovar Yojna, Central Vista project etc have been invited to listen to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation from the ramparts of the iconic monument.
Three JJM beneficiaries from Meghalaya – Gloria Umsong of Makwkynrew, East Khasi Hills; Jenesiuis Marwein, Makwkynrew, East Khasi Hills and Babiangmon Lapang of Mawphrew, Ri Bhoi district – have been invited as special guests.
Gloria said it is a great opportunity for her to witness the I-Day celebration in the national capital.
Terming JJM as a revolutionary initiative of the government, she said JJM has changed lives, especially of the women of her village. Earlier, the villagers had to spend a lot of time in fetching water from wells and ponds but after the village was covered under JJM in 2020, life has now become easier.
Another JJM beneficiary, Jenesiuis Marwein expressed joy and gratefulness to the government for inviting him.
He got access to tap water in 2020. He thanked the PM for envisaging the idea of providing tap water to households.
Babiangmon, a farmer, is equally excited after being invited. She said JJM has removed her hardship of fetching water from one single source.
“Earlier we even had fights among households while collecting water. But after tap water came directly to our households in 2022, all the problems related to getting potable water have ceased to exist,” she said.
Merisuklin Syngkon from East Jaintia Hills, Meduwin Marak and Delpinna Sangma from East Garo Hills, who are beneficiaries of Amrit Sarovar, have been also invited to witness the I-Day celebrations. During the visit, the special guests will also get an opportunity to visit the National War Memorial and the Pradhan Mantri Sangrahalya (museum dedicated to Prime Ministers) in New Delhi.
