Shillong, August 15: Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress president, chose not to attend the 77th Independence Day celebrations held at the Red Fort, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered his address.

Despite his absence, Kharge extended wishes to the nation via a video message. In his message, he subtly criticized the BJP-led Central government, alleging suppression of the Opposition’s voice.

As per IANS, Kharge emphasized the importance of democracy and the constitution, vowing to uphold these principles for the unity, integrity, love, brotherhood, and harmony of the country.

He criticized the current regime for what he perceived as tactics to stifle the Opposition, mentioning actions by agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation, Enforcement Directorate, and Income Tax, along with weakening of the Election Commission.

Kharge also pointed out the contributions of past Prime Ministers, particularly Jawaharlal Nehru, noting that key institutions like AIIMS, IIT, and IIM were established during Nehru’s era. He challenged the notion that progress had only occurred in recent years under the BJP government.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore commented on Kharge’s absence, expressing concerns about the treatment of Opposition leaders and their role in celebrating Independence Day with the people.
